Applying for onsite role when I want remote: use conference "unsolicited" pool o...

At a recent major conference in my field, a company gave attendees a link to submit unsolicited applications "tied to the conference".

I looked at their website and found a very nice job in City A that fits my background well. However I live in City B, three hours away, they don't have an office there and I don't want to relocate nor commute for the moment.

For this position, on their normal job site, the application has the mandatory field "Are you willing to relocate?"

If I say "No" I'm worried the ATS system will automatically reject me. If I say "Yes" I'm lying. I would be open to go on site once or twice a month, but not more for the moment.

What is the best way to apply?

• Use the special conference link and explain in my cover letter that I want the City A job but want to work remotely.

• Apply normally on their website. (If I do this, how do I answer the relocation question?)

The position is on-site, so I am aware that chances of that requirement being lifted are not high. The position is for software development. I don't think that for this position they have hundreds of applicants.

I'd make it clear in your cover letter exactly what flexibility you are prepared to offer, you mentioned being willing to visit a couple of times a month in your question. This will demonstrate that you haven't completely ignored the location factor and also show that you aren't starting from a point of complete intractability.

I can't speak to your chances - you'll likely be at a disadvantage against local candidates if the on-site part of the description is even moderately desirable to the organisation but you have nothing to lose by trying. IF it is a firm requirement your application will be cut quite quickly and you wont really be taking up enough of their time to be annoying.
