How to choose a sensible local domain name for a home network?

How to choose a sensible local domain name for a home network?

Is there any convention on possible naming for local domain names (like .local), apart from not using any possible or existing top-level domain?

Wikipedia says that

  • .local conflicts with zeroconf
  • .localhost is reserved, but is traditionally translated statically to 127.0.0.1
  • .site and .internal are discussed

Top Answer/Comment:

On July 29, 2024, ICANN formally accepted and reserved .internal TLD for private-use applications.

Approved Resolutions at Special Meeting of the ICANN Board on 29 July 2024: a. Reserving .INTERNAL for Private-Use Applications

Resolved (2024.07.29.06), the Board reserves .INTERNAL from delegation in the DNS root zone permanently to provide for its use in private-use applications. The Board recommends that efforts be undertaken to raise awareness of its reservation for this purpose through the organization's technical outreach.

Usage example: nas.home.internal
