Tonowari: We need the warriors here for Calf Communion if the demon ships come.

Jake: My boy is out there by himself.

Tonowari: He will come back when he is ready

I like to think that Jake's approach is natural human instinct wanting to protect his son, while Tonowari's was a leader's approach. He recognized that Lo'ak needs to process what happened to him, resolve his personal issues, learn how to navigate the sea, basically be mature enough for himself before taking on more responsibilities.
