My Kubuntu system can't figure out how much free space is left on my hard drive. There are three sources (as shown in the screenshots), and they all provide different information. I'm inclined to believe that I should have around 190-200 GB of free space, but the installer won't let me install files larger than the claimed 160 GB. Where did the other 40 GB go?

Comment: You mention screenshots, but didn't provide any?? You mention installer but without release details we cannot know what exactly you're asking about; but you control at install time how your disk space is allocated; with full control provided via the Manual Partitioning options; so you may get details of what was actually installed by asking whomever installed your unstated Kubuntu system.
